Captain America Civil War

Well, better late than never as they say; while almost everyone has seen this film by now, I thought I might as well discuss my opinions on it.

Captain America Civil War needs no introduction, almost everyone knows what the movie’s about. But just as a quick recap, Captain America and the Avengers are faced with a sanction placed upon them by the UN. They are required to report to the government and can no longer freely intervene in conflicts around the world. This check on power is seen as a long-needed solution to the rampant destruction left by the Avengers wherever they seem to go. While this sits well with some Avengers like Iron Man; Captain America completely disagrees with it. And thus we come to the title of the film; a fight between our main characters. Civil War is the thirteenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the fourth MCU film to cross a billion dollars in the worldwide box office. If this doesn’t tell you everything about this studio I don’t know what will. Love it or hate it, the onslaught of superhero films shows no signs of slowing down as an estimate of 6 superhero films will be coming out next year. As of the time of writing we have already had 4 superhero films come out this year alone. While some might see this oversaturation of the market as a foreshadowing of a bust in the superhero genre, hollywood seems to disagree, with studios planning these films all the way to 2020, and with rumours of Marvel having plans till 2028. Whether the integrity of independent and original properties coming out Hollywood are being threatened by these box office behemoths, remains to be seen, these heroes appear to be here to stay.

The Walk Review

THE WALK IS NOW AVAILABLE ON BLU-Ray and DVD.

the_walk_movie-hd

On August 7th 1974 The people living in New York City looked above them and saw a miracle. They saw something that will never be seen again. One man walking between the two twin towers located in the heart of the city. Philippe Petit was a French acrobat who dared to do the impossible. With 6 years of planning Philippe Petit managed to string a wire between the Two Towers and walk between them.

This film needs to be seen in Imax 3d to get the full effect. This latest film from Robert Zemeckis who brought us classics like “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”, “Back to The Future”, “Cast Away” and “Forest Gump” is something extraordinary. This film is a pure visual treat, with nice wide camera angles, great effects and great use of 3D. I cannot stress how amazing the 3d effects are. I know that some people think that its gimmicky but the 3D really enhances the story.

Like Gravity this movie relies on spectacle to tell the story. Unfortunately unlike gravity, the script is not strong enough to fully flesh out the characters. Granted, there are more characters in the Walk, but they seem to be very two dimensional. We know Philippe wants to walk between the Twin Towers, and we know he is determined. That’s all we really get to know about him as a character. In fact all the characters have a characteristic and a goal they have to achieve. The film never delves deep enough for the audience to learn anymore. Continue reading “The Walk Review”

Avengers Age of Ultron Review

Minor Spoilers below. Don’t read the quotes in the review if you want to avoid them. This is a edited version of the review I had on my old site. Avengers age of ultron premieres on home video this week. I thought that this would be a good time to post my thoughts on the film. I saw this film in Imax 3d. My expectations were very high for the movie as I am a huge Marvel fan. Also this is a sequel to one of the best  superhero movies ever! To be fair I really shouldn’t have expected so much from it. Joss Whedon’s first avengers movie was a masterpiece by itself, to expect the same results to happen again was foolish. This movie is not as good as the first one. But I still enjoyed it nonetheless. This film is currently sitting at a 75% rating on rotten tomatoes. I can see why this is the case for multiple reasons. The main shortcoming I found in this movie was the overall pace of it. If felt rushed on many occasions. Some characters did not get fleshed out as much as I hoped. This movie is on such as fast pace that it feels as if they are traveling from one fight scene to the next. Unlike the first Avengers movie which took time to flesh out the characters and their motivations before starting the big fights. I understand that this is not entirely Joss Whedons fault. The original cut of the film was 195 minutes long. Marvel cut out 54 minutes of the film. An added hour would have benefited this film more. The truth of the matter is that Avengers Age of Ultron has too many characters for its own good. There is Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Hulk, Quicksilver, Scarlet Which and the Vision. Those are just the main characters. With numerous side characters this movie feels very bloated. In the hands of an incapable director the movie could have exploded and been a colossal failure. Fortunately Joss Whedon still manages to let things stay afloat. Continue reading “Avengers Age of Ultron Review”

Why There Will be no Mission Impossible Rogue Nation Review.

About a week ago I got to go see the new mission impossible movie. Unfortunately the theatre I went too had a problem with the projector, making the screen look too dark. Since I was close to the front I had a hard time following everything that was happening on the screen which in turn ruined my experience. I feel that I would need a second viewing to fully get my thoughts on the movie. Since it will be a while before I can go see the film again I have decided to just let this review go and try on focus on some of the more upcoming movies,

Fantastic Four Review

Fantastic Four Poster

No words can describe the monstrosity my eye’s have witnessed. I might be exaggerating a bit but mind you it’s only a bit. Honestly this movie Sucks,I have never had the misfortune of sitting through such a boring, cliched and downright dumb movie in my life. Fantastic Four is the fourth attempt to bring these characters to the big screen. 4 movies, none of which were fantastic. This movie actually makes the other three movies look good. The worst part of it was that I actually thought this movie would be a break out hit. When the first trailer dropped many people were hating on it and saying it would be a bad film, I on the other hand was pleasantly surprised and was waiting for this movie to blow everyone away. This film had a lot of good things going for it. It had a stellar cast, a good director, and a decent scriptwriter.  Well, I was wrong (understatement of the century) This movie is currently sitting at a stinking 9% on rotten tomatoes. After seeing the scathing reviews I got really curious and wanted to see how bad it was. Well, I guess curiosity does kill the cat since nothing could prepare me for what I was about to witness. The sad thing is, the first 30 or so minutes of this film were actually not that bad. Sure, some of the dialogue was clunky and some situations seemed unlikely but it wasn’t terrible. Then, out of nowhere this movie falls apart in front of your eyes. Continue reading “Fantastic Four Review”

Pixels Movie Review!

p1jpg-886cca_765w

Pixels is the latest movie cranked out by the people at Happy Maddison. Which honestly is all you really need to know about it. The film stars Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Josh Gad, and Peter Dinklage in the starring roles. If you’re expecting Pixels to be some sort of masterpiece that will realign Adam Sandler’s career, you shouldn’t, because this movie is bad. To be fair I enjoyed this film more than some of Sandler’s recent films. The only thing in this movie that kept me barely engaged in the movie were the videogame scenes. You have to admit that it’s pretty cool to see pac man roaming around the streets of New York, or centipede flying through the sky. This film is really all style with no substance. The characters are in no way interesting, which really makes you care less about what’s going on. The worst thing about this movie is the fact that it is a waste of potential. Pixels could have been something creative and even revolutionary instead it falls right into the generic comedy route. The only thing that pleasantly surprised me was the use of 3d in the film. In the end though regardless of good 3d or not you leave the theatre with a sense of emptiness. I really couldn’t recommend this film to anyone over the age of 12. If you’re looking for a film where you can turn your brain off and just enjoy the visuals, you’ll be mildly entertained by Pixels.

Since I’m generous I’ll give Pixels a 6/10
